- 1No llevan -s en tercera persona: «She can swim», nunca «she cans».
- 2Van seguidos de infinitivo sin to: «You should study», nunca «should to study». La excepción son ought to y have to.
- 3No usan do para preguntas ni negaciones: «Can you help me?», «You mustn't smoke».
| Modal | Uso principal | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| can / could | Capacidad, permiso, posibilidad | I can speak three languages. |
| may / might | Posibilidad, permiso formal | It might rain later. |
| must | Obligación personal, deducción segura | I must call my mother. |
| have to | Obligación externa | We have to wear a uniform. |
| should / ought to | Consejo, recomendación | You should see a doctor. |
| mustn't | Prohibición | You mustn't use your phone in the exam. |
| don't have to / needn't | Ausencia de obligación | You don't have to come if you're busy. |
| would | Hipótesis, peticiones educadas, hábitos pasados | Would you open the window? |
Obligación y prohibición: must, have to, mustn't, don't have to
Must expresa una obligación que impone quien habla («I must study more»), y have to una obligación que viene de fuera, como una norma o una ley («We have to be at school at 8»).
| Forma | Significa | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| mustn't | Está prohibido | You mustn't park here. (No puedes aparcar aquí.) |
| don't have to | No es necesario | You don't have to pay. (No hace falta que pagues.) |
| needn't | No es necesario | You needn't bring anything. |
Traducir «no tienes que venir» por «you mustn't come». Eso significa «tienes prohibido venir». Lo correcto es «you don't have to come».
Must no tiene pasado ni futuro. Para esos tiempos usa have to: «I had to work yesterday», «You will have to wait».

Lo contrario de «must be» en deducción no es «mustn't be», sino «can't be». «He must be rich» → «He can't be poor».
Modal perfects: must have, can't have, should have
Los modal perfects (modal + have + participio) hablan del pasado. Son los favoritos del rephrasing de la PAU porque permiten transformar frases como «I'm sure he forgot» o «It was a mistake not to study».
| Estructura | Significa | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| must have + participio | Deducción segura sobre el pasado | She must have missed the bus. (Seguro que perdió el bus.) |

Consejo, permiso y capacidad

- Poner to detrás del modal: «You must to study» → «You must study».
- Añadir -s: «He cans swim» → «He can swim».
- Confundir mustn't y don't have to: prohibición frente a falta de necesidad.
- Usar mustn't para la deducción negativa: «He mustn't be at home» → «He can't be at home».
- Olvidar el participio en los modal perfects: «She should have came» → «She should have come».
- Usar must en pasado: «Yesterday I must work» → «Yesterday I had to work».
Los modal perfects aparecen junto al wish y el third conditional en muchas transformaciones: «I regret not studying» → «I wish I had studied» → «I should have studied».
